The Livelihood Unit believes all livelihoods comprise people, their capabilities and their means of living. Livelihood Unit focuses on Tribal Agriculture in Odisha as a sub area of intervention. The interventional thrust is to systematically transform the low productivity agriculture in this region into a vibrant, sustainable and intensive agriculture, produce sufficient food and fruits to contribute significantly towards food security of the tribal population in the state.

Consultation of Technical Advisory Group of Livelihood Unit
Livelihood programmatic interventions in the areas of Livelihood promotion and security had been having continuous dialogues and discussions with Organizations and individuals working in the areas of livelihood and food security. In the whole process a consensus was arrived at forming a Technical Advisory Group (TAG), of livelihood resource unit which has been providing technical advice and guidance to the core team of Livelihood Unit in its endeavors. The 1st consultation of the Technical Advisory Group was organized on 11th August in the HDF conference hall.
The suggestions were as follows
- Short situation papers on livelihood in some selected districts of Odisha.
- Broad conceptual paper on Livelihood resource unit in terms of academic understanding, development understanding and policy understanding.
- Try to put together things already existing , which are sustainable as well as financially viable
- Mapping the tribal livelihood practices and the best practices
- Model initiative of HDF, in order to place itself as a resource centre
- Analysis of the agriculture policy 2008 with respect to agriculture of schedule areas
- Scope for HDF and XIMB taking up Independent pilot projects on Agriculture and Tribal agriculture
Consultation on “Tribal Agriculture in Odisha”
A consultation meeting on “Tribal Agriculture in Odisha” was organized in HDF conference hall on 21st May 2008. Invited guests and members of HDF took part in the meeting. Invited guests included Mr. Bidyadhara Moharana, ADB Consultant, Mr. Nigamananda Swain Agriculturist, Mrs Rasmi Mohanty Unnayan, members of Adhikar and Mr S.K.Ray participated in the meeting.
Suggestions:
- More elaborate secondary data collection
- Scope for Intervention into ‘Draft Agriculture Policy of the state 2007’
- Giving importance to land rights & land holding pattern
- Collection and compilation of studies and research on tribal livelihood and agriculture and an important source for the same can be Utkal university
- Dialogue and Collaboration with NABARD with respect to its “Wadi” model programmes in Schedule areas
Resolution
It was decided to form a technical assistance group who would assist the Livelihood Unit through technical inputs in its work in the area of Tribal Agriculture in Odisha. Some suggested names were
